Studio Amwell, a new, female-founded, artist-run space in the heart of Clerkenwel, will open its doors for the first time on Thursday 12 October with its inaugural show, Under the Influence: Staying Sane with Titian, Cezanne, El Greco.
Laura Jacobs, founder of Studio Amwell, says that the space will bring artists, art lovers, and locals together under one roof, creating a sense of warmth and community.
Under the Influence brings together five artists – Monica Bernier, Stephanie Franks, Laura Jacobs, Naomi Nemtzow and Lori Sanford-Ross – from London and New York who first met online during the dark early days of the pandemic. Together, they discovered a common purpose: to interpret works by historical masters such as Cezanne, El Greco, and Titian, and see how differently they each responded to the same artwork whilst incorporating what they learned into their own art. Through regular virtual meetings, the five shared and discussed their responses to different pieces and, in the process, developed a rich, expansive ongoing intellectual exchange of ideas that has nurtured their creative output over the past three years. Along the way, they also built strong personal connections, and founded a supportive community for their work and creative lives.
“Here we are three years later, says Jacobs, “a supportive and vibrant community, discussing the deeply personal to the professional and back again with the ease and enthusiasm of a noisy family round the dinner table! It’s a delight and privilege to be able to welcome these great women and talented artists to my hometown and to be showing and sharing this work together in my new space.”
The exhibition will also feature the work of two guest artists, American sculptor Robert Braczyk and British sculptor Lee Tribe.
The show features work in a variety of media and approaches, whether representational or abstract. Each of the works on view grows from the process of a 21st century artist in dialogue with a painting from a previous century.
In the coming months, Studio Amwell will also be home to a series of other special events including further group shows and workshops that will foster collaboration among a range of creative professionals.
The soft opening of Studio Amwell and its inaugural exhibition, Under the Influence will take place on 12 October, 1-5pm, the opening reception will be 14 October, 3 – 6pm at
Studio Amwell, 37 Amwell Street, London EC1R 1UR. Studio Amwell will be open to visitors from Wednesday to Saturday, 1 – 5pm.
