Islington Guided Walks (the Mayor of Islington’s official tour guides) are currently taking applications for their award winning Clerkenwell & Islington Tour Guiding course. The course which leads to a professional qualification in tour guiding is designed to enable students to develop the presentation skills required to be an excellent tour guide whilst discovering the rich and varied history and heritage of Clerkenwell & Islington.  From its great Medieval monastic houses and handsome Georgian squares to its long-standing reputation as a centre for radical thought, lively entertainment and health-giving waters Clerkenwell and Islington is an endlessly fascinating place for guides and their clients.
The skills gained on the course can also be transferred to guiding elsewhere and can be a valuable asset in other walks of life.
Having successfully completed the course students are invited to join the Clerkenwell & Islington Guides’ Association (which operates under the name Islington Guided Walks) and become one of the Mayor of Islington’s official guides. The association which was set up in 1988  provides a supportive network of fellow guides and a platform for publicising members’ walks in the area. The Association works closely with Islington Heritage and other council departments designing and leading a variety of walks such as walks relating to exhibitions at Islington Museum, commemorating key anniversaries and supporting health and well being. Members also guide at St John’s Gate in Clerkenwell, The Charterhouse in Smithfield and other Islington landmarks and have access to The Clerks’ Well – after which Clerkenwell is named.

The 2024 course will run Wednesday 10th January to Wednesday 17th July 2024 and consists of a weekly evening class at Islington Central Library and practical “on the street” practices approximately every other Saturday.
