Join Islington Archives for their monthly drop-in on the last Thursday of each month to explore displays from their unique local history collections.
As the summer fades and the school year begins this month’s drop-in will feature records that tell the story of education within the borough. Islington has had many significant moments within the history of schooling; from radical roots in Newington Green including the establishment of a boarding school for girls set up by Mary Wollstonecraft in 1785, to Yvonne Conolly becoming Britain’s first Black headteacher in 1969 at Ringcross School.
This drop-in will highlight some of these stories, as well as feature some of the delightful materials held in the collections covering the subject of education: posters for school fairs, photos of Victorian classrooms, and clippings celebrating the achievements across the borough.
