Hoshi, a sustainability-led website app, is looking for local businesses in the Clerkenwell area to help expand their initiative. The idea was founded by local students, Chloe Galea and Chloe Briens, who wanted to create a platform that encourages other students and residents to partake in environmentally positive activities, leading to a stronger community.
Chloe says the reason for creating the app: “With everything that’s happening with climate change, the environment has been progressively degrading itself.” She continues: “So, we wanted to find a fun and interactive way we could make a sustained impact on the environment”
The pair won the national ISA Steam, a competition that looks for young students to find solutions to modern problems. After developing the concept even more, the duo launched the website itself last month, with a few independent businesses teaming up with them already.
The website gives students weekly challenges, in return winning vouchers and coupons. They explain: “It’s in a fun and competitive nature to leverage the students to come back and do environmental activities; like picking three plastic bottles from the ground and putting them in the bin or taking public transport to school.” The app works through a gaming system, upping competitiveness. They say the reaction from peers has been positive with many taking part.
The app is currently based in the Russell Square area of Holborn, though the pair are looking to reach out to more businesses in the Clerkenwell area to encourage students and young people to shop local: “On our lunch breaks or after school, most people go to chain restaurants and cafes. We really want to encourage the supportive nature and interact with small businesses.”
