Marx Memorial Library and Islington Heritage announce the launch of Reds on the Green, a programme of events to foster a deeper understanding of Clerkenwell Green’s rich heritage. Islington residents are invited to discover this radical history through free monthly sessions exploring local stories, groundbreaking ideas and key individuals associated with the area.
Clerkenwell Green has been at the heart of London’s radical politics for over 600 years. Wat Tyler is said to have camped on the Green during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, Eleanor Marx addressed trade unionists here and Vladimir Lenin published his underground newspaper Iskra from 37a Clerkenwell Green.
Despite this, many people in the local community are unaware of this internationally important history. Our public programme will offer insights into these movements, events, and individuals that gave the local area its identity.
Come and join us on Thursday 13 June, 6.30pm-8.00pm, when we uncover the story of Wat Tyler and the Peasants’ Revolt at the Museum of the Order of Saint John with readings from actor (and Marx Memorial Library Vice-President) Maxine Peake with a Q&A with historian James Crossley. On 18 July we’ll explore the history of the Tolpuddle Martyrs with an exhibition and reception at the Marx Memorial Library at 6pm.
Sessions are free, drop-in events with no need to book. Further dates to be announced in the coming weeks.
