The team at the Charterhouse let us know their summer programme, which includes garden open evenings, tours and Shakespeare!

Spend a relaxing summer evening in our beautiful courtyard gardens hidden in the heart of London.

We will be opening our gates on three evenings this summer, so come and discover our atmospheric gardens designed to enhance and complement our fascinating historic site. There will be live music presented by the Sol Grimshaw Trio, a bar and food vans selling wood fired pizzas and fish & chips (with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free alternatives).

Discover the enchanting courtyard gardens of the Charterhouse on a 60-minute Garden Tour led by a member of our Horticulture team. The tour will take in Charterhouse Square and the gardens within our walls, providing a wonderful opportunity to see the gardens at their best as well as to hear about their history, and the team’s work to maintain and develop the gardens while supporting biodiversity.

Shakespeare in the Square – The Taming of the Shrew

We are delighted to welcome back Shakespeare in the Square to the Charterhouse on Wednesday 18 June. Their performance of Taming of the Shrew will take place in Master’s Court this year rather than Charterhouse Square, and the Norfolk Garden will be open for ticketholders to have a picnic beforehand. Doors open at 17:30 and the performance starts at 19:00.

The HandleBards – Much Ado About Nothing

We are thrilled to welcome back the HandleBards to the Charterhouse on Tuesday 8 July.

Join the troupe for a bicycle-powered production of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ like you’ve never seen before. In usual HandleBards style, expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter.

Doors open at 18.00 so bring a picnic to enjoy before the performance at 19.00.

East London Theatre Festival – As You Like It

The Charterhouse are pleased to welcome East London Shakespeare Festival with As You Like It on Thursday 31 July.

This joyful, family-friendly outdoor production blends contemporary London culture with the Bard’s wit, romance, and secret identities.

With ELSF’s signature high-energy numbers, slapstick comedy, and audience participation, this is Shakespeare for everyone! Doors open at 6.30pm so feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy before the performance starts at 7.30pm.
