Surya Anthony takes a closer look at the stories taking shape behind the lens, as this year’s Clerkenwell Photography Competition heads into its home stretch.

Last year, someone submitted a photo of a pigeon taking in our city skyline from Vine Street Bridge. Another entrant (Under 12, might I add) captured a perfect still of a cat playing with a feather that seemingly defies gravity by St. Luke’s. There were Architectural marvels. Vibrant Street life and the odd self portrait. Unexpected wildlife cameos. And yes, more than a few prize-winning pigeons.
It’s safe to say the Clerkenwell Community Photography Competition continues to surprise us in the best possible ways. And now, we’re back for 2025, and officially in the final month of entries.
This year’s theme is Clerkenwell Captured. We’re talking about the real stuff: the corners you walk past every day, the strangers you always notice, the light that hits a building just right at 7:13am. It’s not about perspective, not perfection.
And here’s something we’re especially excited about this year: memories. If you’ve got an old photo tucked in an album or hidden in a shoebox; maybe something your grandparents took in the ‘40s, or a forgotten gem from your own childhood, we’d love to see it. The competition isn’t just about what Clerkenwell looks like today. It’s about the layers, the stories, the way it used to be. History is part of the picture too.
The competition is open to photographers of all ages and experience levels. Entries are divided into five age groups (Under 12s, 12–18, 19–34, 35–65, and 65+), with a special Peel Prize for Year 11 and under. And for those who prefer to tell a story across multiple frames, there’s a standalone Series category open to everyone, no matter your age.

Last year, we received over 340 photos from 150+ entrants. The talent was wild. The judging was genuinely difficult. And the exhibition? Packed with proud entrants pointing out their favourites and whispering “I took that one.” The best part? Seeing the faces of kids (and grown-ups) spotting their work up on the wall.
Now it’s your turn.
Entries close on 3rd August 2025, so you’ve got one glorious month to get out there and show us what makes Clerkenwell yours. It could be a single striking shot, or a short series that tells a story. If you’re not sure where to begin, start with what you love about this place.
