Marx Memorial Library (MML) proudly announces its vibrant lineup of events to mark May Day, and its lasting significance to the global labour movement. As crowds converge upon the newly redeveloped Clerkenwell Green, MML stands at the forefront, presenting two engaging gatherings poised to enlighten and inspire.
On May 1st MML anticipates a record turnout for its annual Open Day. Attendees will immerse themselves in stalls and displays, with a highlight being the esteemed presence of Vijay Prashad, renowned Indian journalist, political commentator, and author. Prashad – as is customary – will be speaking from the steps of the MML before the May Day march leaves the Green.
Moreover, feature tours of MML’s historic building offer an exclusive glimpse into the history of revolutionary thought housed at the Library. Visitors will set foot in the Lenin Room, where the visionary Russian leader once toiled during his exile in London. Additionally, MML proudly showcases an original fresco by Jack Hastings, a poignant depiction of the relentless struggle against capitalism.
Preceding May Day, MML extends an invitation to local residents and all those keen to find out more – for a prelude event on April 29th. This gathering – convening at 6.30pm – serves as a gateway for attendees to delve into the origins and enduring significance of May Day. Under the banner of ‘May Day May Day!’, participants will be treated to an immersive experience, featuring music from the Raised Voices choir and an engaging document handling session drawing from MML’s archive.
The highlight of this free drop-in event is a riveting Q&A session featuring esteemed labour historian Mary Davis and distinguished trade unionist Alex Gorson. Together, they unravel the intricate tapestry of May Day’s genesis, tracing its roots back to the nineteenth century, while illuminating why its spirit continues to resonate with so many today.
This is the first in a ‘Reds on the Green’ series of collaborative monthly introductory sessions aimed at bringing radical history to life for the local community.
