Landmark achievement confirms status as a leading national centre for socialist and labour history.
The Marx Memorial Library has officially been awarded Archive Service Accreditation, the UK’s gold standard for archive management and public access.
This prestigious recognition confirms the Library’s position as one of the country’s most trusted and professionally run historical archives.
Founded in 1933, the Marx Memorial Library is home to a unique and internationally significant collection documenting the history of Marxism, trade unionism, and working-class struggle.
The Accreditation, awarded by the UK Archive Service Accreditation Panel, recognises institutions that demonstrate excellence in governance, collections care, and user services.
“This is a major milestone for us,” said Meirian Jump, Director of the Marx Memorial Library. “It’s the result of years of focused work to professionalise our service, safeguard our collections, and ensure the stories of working class people are accessible to all.
“Accreditation opens doors to new funding opportunities and supports our ability to grow the archive with new donations and partnerships.”
The Marx Memorial Library now joins a select group of accredited institutions across the UK, including leading universities, local authorities, and national museums.
The Accreditation Panel commended the Library’s expert staff, strong governance, and public engagement, noting its resilience and responsiveness in an evolving cultural landscape.
It also paid tribute to the MML’s network of trustees, volunteers and partners which play a critical role in its work.
This recognition marks a new chapter for the Library as it continues its mission to preserve, protect, and promote working-class history for generations to come.
