The Black Mary Project will be hosting a series of creative workshops at Calthorpe Community Gardens between the 5th and the 9th of November as part of Camden Black History Season. Everyone is welcome to take part!
Inspired by the story of Mary Wollaston, a free Black woman, who legend has it, ran a healing well in the King’s Cross area, each creative workshop will allow participants to leave a story of their relationship to water and healing through flower dye, fabric and stitch, in the form of offering cloths, for a ritual event on Saturday 9th November.
The ritual will mark the spot where a sculpture, memorialising Black Mary, will be installed next summer. Stories gathered will also contribute to a textile piece, created by artist Gaylene Gould, to be exhibited at Wellcome Collection in June 2025.
The workshops are all drop in and can be participated in for as long as desired. They will run from 12pm until 4.30pm. People will also be able to learn more about the history of Mary from local Islington tour guide, Emanuela Aru. Timetable below:
